On exhibit at L'espace Verdet, in collaboration with the city of Saint Paul de Vence and thanks to items loaned by Baldwin's personal friends, Les Amis de la Maison Baldwin is pleased to present a retrospective of his 17 years in the south of France, entitled James Baldwin: Saint Paulois.

Curated by Pitou Roux and in recognition of the 30th anniversary of his death, the Friends of la Maison Baldwin presents an exposition of personal objects and photographs of James Baldwin.

The goal of this retrospective is to redress the lack of public recognition of James Baldwin in Saint Paul, to valorize his history in the village; to attract a new audience to his work in person and on line; and to honor his enormous contribution to our international literary heritage.

The retrospective will include Baldwin's photographs in his home in Saint Paul de Vence by the photographer Alain Cinquini. Also on display will be the typewriter on which he worked all of his life; his huge and well used Webster's Unabridged dictionary; drafts of French translations of Blues for Mister Charlie by Yvonne Roux; and several books from his personal library. The exhibition will also include  rare works by the painter David Baldwin, one of James' brothers.

On opening day and closing day, we will gather for readings from James Baldwin's work, listen to music that was dear to him, and share personal tributes.
