ARTITUDE: Art • Words • Design

Four Saturdays: July 11 to August 1, 2020, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm EST

A generative and writing exchange workshop in poetry

The idea is to engage writers/poets to develop poems centered around visualization, empowerment, social awareness, internal-investigation, using various forms of poetry with minimal graphic design elements.

By investigating poetry books which use design elements and watching films on design, the workshop discovers writing and branding techniques, such as color manipulation, font development, and writing forms used for accessibility. Through conversation, we identify sources of influence from poets, artist, activist, music, social media influencers, posters, billboards, and slogans, then thinking of personal, historical, multi-cultural, or activism concepts that will be developed through weekly writing prompts and the exchange of our creative work.

Maison Baldwin 2020 Residency Fellow Rico Frederick is a graphic designer and the author of the book Broken Calypsonian (Penmanship Books, 2014). He has taught poetry workshops at Cave Canem, Urban Word NYC, various universities, and community spaces nationwide. Which lead to ARTITUDE, a generative workshop infusing poetry with graphic design. Rico is a Trinidadian transplant, lives in New York, loves gummy bears, and scribbles poems on the back of maps in the hope they will take him someplace new.
