Charise Sowells is the founder of Unabashed Productions whose company motto is, "Don't just think outside the box, live there." As a young creative and activist, she noticed a lack of representation in the media early on which inspired her to tell her community's stories in hopes of making a difference. Sowells is a graduate of the Dramatic Writing Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where she earned academic honors and was the recipient of multiple awards for her envelope pushing scripts. Her thesis play was accepted into the DC Black Theater Festival and adapted into a feature film.
Sowells participated in the Robey Theater Company's playwriting workshop. There have been two staged productions of her one act play about multiracial identity called "An Ocean In My Soul" at the Santa Monica Playhouse. Sowells wrote the script, produced the shows, and composed the music. Her songs have been featured by SF Weekly, Ukulele Magazine, NPR, and on radio stations both regionally and internationally. One single, “Mr. Fantasy”, won Song of the Year on a Berlin based radio show. Additionally, Sowells has created content for several companies, exhibited her fine art photography, taught, and directed music videos.
