Seeking our first Executive Director

May 19, 2020

Executive Director, La Maison Baldwin

please apply by June 15

James Baldwin by Carl Van Vetchen, 1955

La Maison Baldwin seeks a visionary leader to steer us through the coming phase of organizational growth. This will be the organization’s first paid staff position. It is a part-time, remote consulting job with the potential to transition to a full-time, onsite salaried position in the south of France.

Les de la Maison Baldwin is a French nonprofit cultural association (loi 1901) whose mission is to celebrate the life of James Baldwin in Saint Paul de Vence, the village on the Cote d’Azur where he lived for the last 17 years of his life.

The ideal candidate will have

  • a personal and/or professional relationship to the work of James Baldwin

  • significant and measurable experience in nonprofit fundraising

  • fluency in French language and culture

  • a history of entrepreneurial community organizing and leadership, particularly around social justice and racism;

  • administrative and digital skills and the resiliency to fill many roles at once

The organization

Current projects include the Writer in Residence Program, now entering its second year; the 2021 Conference on James Baldwin; and our onsite Welcome Center, currently on lockdown but which normally sees hundreds of visitors per week in the busy season.

In our four-year start-up phase, we have built relationships with local and federal governments, including the St. Paul de Vence Mayor's Office and the French Ministry of Culture; gathered support from a circle of distinguished U.S. writers and luminaries; enlisted prominent advisors in roles formal and informal; attracted a top-notch fundraising consulting firm which is currently starting work on a capital campaign; secured a 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor; earned credibility among U.S. universities and Baldwin scholars; developed relationships with local restaurants and merchants in St. Paul de Vence, and built a membership mailing list of more than 1,000 supporters.

Job Duties

  • Fundraising: French government grants, U.S. foundations, major donors, crowdfunding, revenue-generating programs

  • Organisational spokesperson in the U.S. and France

  • Overseeing programs such as the residency project and the welcome center

  • Managing interns and volunteers; staffing the board and committees

  • Coordinating the 2021 International Conference on James Baldwin

  • Developing online programming for pandemic times

  • Serving as community liaison to the government, businesses and residents of St. Paul de Vence

  • Guiding the future and vision of the organization

Start Date, Schedule, Benefits and Salary

The position would begin immediately on a part-time, work-at-home contract basis. When fundraising benchmarks are met and pandemic conditions allow, the job would ideally evolve to a full-time salaried position in the south of France.

For a non-French citizen, the organization would provide an employment contract required for a long-term visa. This legal resident status comes with standard government benefits such as social security and free healthcare, childcare and education for the director, their partners and their children.

Salary is contingent upon experience and commensurate with the cost of living in southern France.
